“To boldly go where no man has gone before”
JJ Abrhams has certainly taken this to heart when deciding to re-vision the Star Trek franchise. He has taken it to were no one has gone before and the result is a movie that is faithed to become a Sci-Fi- classic. He has done what seemed to be impossible; made a film that is enjoyable for non Star Trek Fans, the casual fans and the die-hard Trekkies. With the help of a great cast and fearless storytelling Abrams was able to keep a lot of the old Star Trek traditions intact. A remarkable feat given the fact that the plot revolves around an alternate time line.
A Romulan Captain (Erics Bana) travels through a black hole and in doing so alters the time-line for a young James T Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Making this movie not only a prequel but a reboot of the long beloved franchise. The movie is filled with action, thrills, humor and absolute fun to keep any moviegoer excited. There are tons of inside Trekkie reference and the casting of the familiar characters was done to perfection.
We are introduced to a James T Kirk at an early stag in his life. He is a aimless young man with an act to getting into mischief. He also processes that self awareness of confidence that we have come to associate with Kirk. He runs into a Star Fleet Caption, Christoper Pike (Bruce Greenwood), who dares him to enlist and make a difference.
Once at the Star Fleet Academy he soon gets into a confrontation with a Vulcan commander named Spock (Zachary Quinto). Before this conflict can resolve itself they are called out to answer an emergency to Spocks home planet of Vulcan. What take place next is an epic tale of genocide and revenge stirred on by Nero, the time traveling Romulan Captain. Who has an unhealthy and deadly interest in Spock. Along the way we get to see more familiar faces including McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho), Chekhov (Anton Yelchin), and Scottie (Simon Pegg).
The visuals and action sequences makes for a truly spectacular Big-Screen Movie. Luckily the movie on Blu-ray does not disappoint. If anything, it succeeds beyond expectations. And just may be the best example of what the Blu-ray format can offer.
