One of four new Blu-ray Players from Panasonic in 2010, the DMP-BD45, is the least expensive. It is an entry level Blu-ray Player that has just the basic features and functions. It is a Profile 1.1, so there is no Ethernet Port for an internet connection. Therefore you can not access any BD-Live content that might be found on a Blu-ray Disc. This is particularly strange, given that almost every new Blu-ray Player from it’s competitors is BD-Live capable. Panasonic seems to have made a conscious decision to leave this element out to keep the price of the DMP-BD45 low.
- Adaptive High Precision 4:4:4: Get more Vibrant, Smooth and Truthful Color Reproduction with this feature. The DMP-BD85 can reproduce color signals in horizontal directions and with higher resolution. This is not only done with Full-HD movies in 1080p, but also concert and documentary films that are in 1080i can be reproduced with greater quality and details.
- 0.5 Second Quick Start: Avoid the stress and inconvenience of slow booting Blu-ray Players. With ultra fast booting, the boot time from standby to power-on has been vastly reduced from past blu-ray models. Allowing for fast 0.5 second booting. Enjoy movies without the stress of all that waiting time.
- PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus: This is a high quality image processing technology which processes each pixel produced by the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the vertical direction. To keep original colors crisp and clear, it reproduces color data with twice the accuracy of normal systems.
- VIERA Link Eco Function: You get Smart Energy Saving with VIERA Link. The Panasonic DMP-BD85 Blu-ray player excels in features such as the VIERA Link energy saving functions. Blu-ray Disc player will automatically turn on/off depending on the TV status.
- Dimensions: 12.3/16” (H) x 16 15/16” (W) x 9 13/16” (D) 5.7 lbs
The DMP-BD45 is slim looking with a non glossy black finish. The control panels are located to the front of the player. Right below the disc loading tray is a drop down flap lid that hides the SD Card Port. It supports SDHD Cards from 4GB to 32GB and SDXC Cards from 32GB to 2TB. Here you can access JPEG images or AVCHD data on a HD camcorders, or play DivX, and MP3 files. All of the other inputs and outputs are located on the back of the player. It is equipped with Panasonic’s Ultra Fast 0.5 sec Booting feature. While it may not be this fast, it helps speed up the booting process and discs loading times.

Even for a basic entry level Blu-ray Player, the DMP-BD45 still has very good video quality when playing Blu-ray discs. It is capable of Full HD 1080/24p output on capable HDTV. It can achieve good quality images because it has the same image technology, developed by Panasonic Hollywood Labs, that is found on past Panasonic players. Such as the PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus. This feature, which works together with high precision 4:4:4, processes every pixel on the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the vertical direction. Producing colors that will have twice the amount of accuracy of normal systems and keeps the colors original and crisp.
The DMP-BD45 has the new version of P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing for HD). This processes 15 Billion pixel per second and optimizes each pixel to get the best detail and color reproduction. It also detects motion, diagonal processing which gets rid of jaggies, and is responsible for upscaling DVDs to near HD 1080p levels.

You can connect the DMP-BD45 ausio through the following: HDMI, analog 2.0ch. and digital audio outputs. It can output Dolby® Digital Plus/ Dolby® TrueHD and DTS™-HD Master Audio Essential/ DTS™-HD High Resolution Audio in bitstream form to an audio/Video receiver. It does not have multi-channel analog outputs, so this would be the only way to get High Resolution sound.

Although the DMP-BD45 does not have a lot of the extra features you would find on some of the other Blu-ray Players, Panasonic has made an effort to lower the DMP-BD45’s power consumption. reducing consumption from 19 watts to 14 watts and when it is on stand by the power consumption is reduced from 0.6 watts to 0.1 watts. This ia a very appealing function that you will not find on many Blu-ray Players.
THE PROS: Helped by features like PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus and Adaptive High Precision 4:4:4, the Panasonic DMP-BD45 has very good Video quality for an entry level Blu-ray Player. It has internal audio decoding for Linear PCM, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS. It also has a Quick start mode and fast loading times. Low power consumption.
THE CONS: No Ethernet port, so this Blu-ray Player is Profile 1.1 with no internet connection. Not capable of BD-Live content.
THE FINAL WORD: The Panasonic DMP-BD45 performs very well on playback of Blu-ray Discs. It's Video and Audio quality is very good for an entry level Blu-ray Player. It is lacking an internet connection which may not appeal to some people. However, the DMP-BD45 Blu-ray Player's low price may make up for it. Add to this it's low power consumption, the DMP-BD45 maybe the perfect starting point for someone to begin experiencing the wonders of High Definition. -- Price you should look for when purchasing -- Under $150.00
