Blu-ray Players Have Invaded 17% of U.S. Households

According to a recent report by Home Media Magazine, Blu-ray Players have become a stable fixture in 17% of U.S home as of July 2010. This is great news for the Blu-ray format as it nearly doubles the number of households that have adopted Blu-ray since 2008. While much of this 17% is made up of Sony’s PlayStation 3, stand alone Blu-ray Players are consistently making up ground and you are starting to see a shift towards dedicated Blu-ray Players.

Before, two PlayStation 3’s were purchased for every one stand alone Blu-ray Player. But in the past 6 months, 47% are using the PlayStation 3 to enjoy Blu-ray movies, while 45% use stand alone Blu-ray Players. This study by Centris indicates the PlayStation 3 is still the dominate force in Blu-ray but dedicated players are gaining ground fast.

Another report by Futuresource Consulting states that world wide sales of stand alone Blu-ray Players should reach 24 million units by the end of 2010. Around 10% of Blu-ray Players sold in 2010 have included support for 3D Blu-ray Discs. Indicating a slow growth in this adoption of 3D Home Entertainment.
